A brief overview of the mummification proces ...
1. remove the organs
The intestines, stomach, liver, kidneys ... Egyptians left the heart in place. They thought that the soul lived here. The lungs, liver and kidneys were mummified separately. It is not clear how you can remove the brain without damaging the skull. We have tried to make a hole through the nose. This proved harder than expected. Finally we removed the brain through a cut in the neck of the dog.
2. disinfect the dog
Disinfect the dog with rubbing alcohol to kill bacteria. The Egyptians used palm wine.
3. cover the dog with Natron
Natron is a mixture of sodium hydrogen carbonate (sodium bicarbonate), and sodium carbonate (soda) as it is found at the edges of concentrated salt lakes in the Egyptian desert. Stuff the dog with small linen bags filled with natron. The salt draws all the moisture out. Leave the dog in the natron for a few weeks. When it's dry you are ready for phase 2: embalming and wrapping your mummy.

Een kort overzicht van het mummificatieproces...
1. verwijder de organen
De darmen, maag, lever, nieren... het hart lieten Egyptenaren zitten. Ze dachten dat hier de ziel huisde. De longen, lever en nieren werden apart gemummificeerd. Het is niet helemaal duidelijk hoe je de hersenen er uit kan halen zonder de schedel te beschadigen. Wij hebben geprobeerd om een gat te maken via de neus. Dit bleek moeilijker dan gedacht. Uiteindelijk hebben we de hersenen verwijderd door een snee te maken in de nek van de hond.
2. ontsmetten
Ontsmet de hond met ontsmettingsalcohol om bacteriën te doden. De Egyptenaren gebruikten palmwijn.
3. bedek de hond met natron
Natron is een mengsel van natriumwaterstofcarbonaat (natriumbicarbonaat) en natriumcarbonaat (soda) zoals dat wordt gevonden aan de randen van geconcentreerde zoutmeren in de Egyptische woestijn. Vul de hond met kleine linnenzakjes gevuld met natron. Zout onttrekt het vocht. Laat de hond een paar weken liggen. Als het uitgedroogd is ben je klaar voor fase 2: het balsemen en inwikkelen van je mummie.
